■Japan’s child population at record low for 42nd consecutive year
Japan’s birth rate has hit its lowest point for the 42nd consecutive year, according to recent data released by the Japanese government.
As of April 1, the country had 14.35 million children below the age of 14, a decrease of approximately 300,000 compared to the previous year. Of these children, 7.35 million were boys and 7 million were girls. This represents the lowest proportion of children in Japan’s total population since 1950, at 11.5%.
To counter this decline, the government established the Children and Families Agency in April 2023, aiming to improve child care services and explore measures such as increased financial support for families with children.
Among 36 countries with over 40 million people, Japan has the fewest children, followed by South Korea and Italy.
Projections indicate a further decline, with the child population expected to drop below 10 million by 2053 and reach 7.97 million by 2070.
The effectiveness of the government’s plan to boost birth rates remains uncertain.

■日本の子供の数、４２年連続過去最低更新
政府が最近発表したデータによって、日本の出生率は４２年連続過去最少を更新している。
４月１日時点では、１４歳以下の子供の数は１４３５万人であり、前年比約３０万人の減少となる。そのうち、男の子が735万人、女の子が700万人を占めている。日本の全人口の11.5%を占めており、1950年以降で過去最少となっている。
この減少の対策として、子育てサービスの拡充や、子育て世帯への経済的支援などの方針の検討を目標として、政府は２０２３年４月にこども家庭庁を設立した。
人口４０００万人以上の３６ヵ国の中で、韓国とイタリアに次いで日本の子供の数が最低である。
さらなる減少が予想されており、子供の数が２０５３年には１０００万人を下回って、２０７０年までには７９７万人まで低下する見込みである。
政府による出生率を促進する対策の効果ははっきりしないままである。
