色を使ったイディオムをいくつか紹介するね。

「ちょっと悲しい」って意味は feeling blue 。

My best friend from university emailed me out of the blue yesterday. I was so happy to hear from her!
(昨日、大学の頃の親友が急にメールしてきたよ。連絡が来て、嬉しかった！)

out of the blue は「突然」とか「期待せず」って意味。
なんで blue を使うんだろう。理由は、青い空から「突然」何かが落ちてくるイメージからだよ。

I really wasn’t in the mood to go out tonight, but my coworkers were really persistent. I had no choice but to raise the white flag.
(今夜、本当は出かける気分じゃなかったけど、同僚に凄くしつこく誘われたし。降伏するしかなかった～)

white flag は「戦争で降伏する」って意味。だから raise the white flag は「あきらめる」って意味で使われるよ。
