■Hermit crabs are using trash as shells
Many hermit crabs are now living in our trash instead of shells. Scientists found that out of 16 kinds of land hermit crabs, 10 are only living in trash. Dr. Marta Szulkin and her team from the University of Warsaw saw that about 85% of hermit crabs in online pictures were using trash as their homes.
This is happening because there aren’t enough shells anymore. Animals that make shells are disappearing, and people are taking shells from beaches, leaving none for the crabs. Scientists are worried about how living in trash might affect hermit crabs in the long run. The study was published in Science of the Total Environment, highlighting the impact of our trash on animals.
