■It’s puffin tossing season in Iceland
Every September in Iceland, people help baby puffins by tossing them off cliffs. Puffins are black and white birds that come to the Westman Islands to lay their eggs. When the baby puffins are ready to fly, they jump off the cliffs to reach the ocean. They use the full moon to find their way, but bright electric lights can confuse them, making some fly into towns and get hurt.
To assist the puffins, volunteers toss them toward the ocean, guiding them in the right direction. They wear gloves to protect both the birds and themselves from germs.
Kyana Sue Powers, a volunteer, enjoys helping the puffins and often tells them, “I can’t wait to see you again.”
■アイスランドはパフィン投げの季節
毎年9月、アイスランドでは人々が幼いパフィンが崖から海へ飛び降りるのを手伝います。
パフィンは黒と白の海鳥で、ウエストマン諸島に卵を産むためにやってきます。
幼いパフィンは飛ぶ準備ができると、崖から飛び降りて海に向かいます。パフィンは満月を頼りに道を見つけますが、明るい電気の光が混乱させ、一部は町に飛び込んで怪我をすることがあります。
パフィンを助けるために、ボランティアの人たちはパフィンを海の方に投げて、正しい方向に導きます。ボランティアは、パフィンと自分たちを細菌から守るために手袋を着用しています。
ボランティアのキアナ・スー・パワーズは、パフィンを助けることを楽しんでおり、しばしば「また会えるのが待ち遠しいよ」とパフィンへ伝えているのです。
