New satellites are made to fall back to Earth when done. But Aeolus was from the 1990s and needed ESA's help to come down. Using leftover fuel, ESA directed Aeolus to descend toward Antarctica in late July. From about 360 kilometers up, it gradually fell. At 80 kilometers, most of it burned up due to heat. More than 80% of the satellite was destroyed. What was left fell harmlessly into the Atlantic Ocean. Isabel Rojos, from ESA, called this "sustainable and responsible."
